Post a great passage by a great writer. Preferably fiction. Add who wrote it and what book and what page number if you have it near by.
I'll start. This is the opening to Cormac McCarthy's "The Road." I was reading this passage came to the end of the passage and literally dropped the book on the ground saying, "Jesus Christ." Dude is flawless with his: "When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him. Nights dark beyond darkness and days more gray each one than what had gone before. Like the onset of some cold glaucoma dimming away the world. His hand rose and fell softly with each precious breath. he pushed away the plastic tarpaulin and raised himself in the stinking robes and blankets and looked toward the east for any light but there was none. In the dream from which he'd wakened he had wandered in a cae where the child led him by the hand. Their light playing over the wet flowstone walls. Like pilgrims in a fable swallowed up and lost among the inward parts of some granitic beast. Deep stone flutes where the water dripped and sang. Tolling in the silence the minutes of the earth and the hours and the days of it and the years without cease. Until they stood in a great stone room where lay a black and ancient lake. And on the far shore a creature that raised its dripping mouth from the rimstone pool and stared into the light with eyes dead white and sightless as the eggs of spiders. It swung its head low over the water as if to take the scent of what it could not see. Crouching there pale and naked and translucent, its alabaster bones cast up in the shadow on the rocks behind it. Its bowels, its beating heart. The brain that pulsed in a dull glass bell. It swung its head from side to side and then gave out a low moan and turned and lurched away and loped soundless into the dark." Another Cormac that is in Outer Dark where a guy is watching three strangers kill his baby by a campfire: "Holme saw the blade wink in the light like a long cat's eye slant and malevolent and a dark smile erupted on the child's throat and went all broken down the front of it. The child made no sound. It hung there with its one eye glazing over like a wet stone and the black blood pumping down its naked belly."

Well, bringing up Grendel is unfair, cause you could pretty much turn to any random page, and be amazed by the nigga; John Gardner was friggin' ridiculous. I especially love trying to figure out wtf the dragon was talking about, but as I said, the writing is amazing in that entire book; easily my favorite ever.
Peace. IllaMentalz!!

Here's a better website, Scourge: go here for all things Grendel-->
http://www.brtom.org/gr/grendintro.html Peace. IllaMentalz!! Edit--> Here's another awesome quote, that I found randomly, by just literally opening the book to a random page: "All at once, as if by sudden vision, I understood the emptiness in the eyes of those humpbacked shapes back in the cave. (Were they my brothers, my uncles, those creatures shuffling brimstone-eyed from room to room, or sitting separate, isolated, muttering forever like underground rivers, each in his private, inviolable gloom?) I understood that the world was nothing: a mechanical chaos of casual, brute enmity on which we stupidly impose our hopes and fears. I understood that, finally and absolutely, I alone exist. All the rest, I saw, is merely what pushes me, or what I push against, blindly--as blindly as all that is not myself pushes back. I create the whole universe, blink by blink.--An ugly god pitifully dying in a tree!" (p. 21-22). See? Friggin' awesome.

Rorschach's journal. October 12th, 1985:
Dog carcass in the alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen it's true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicans will look up and shout "save us!"...and I'll look down and whisper "No." They had a choice, all of them. They could have followed in the footsteps of good men like my father, or President Truman...decent men, who believed in a day's wok for a day's pay. Instead they followed the droppings of lechers and communists and didn't realize the trail led over a precipice until it was too late. Don't tell me they didn't have a choice. Now the whole world stand on the brink, staring down into bloody hell, all those liberals and intellectuals and smooth-talkers...and all of a sudden, nobody can think of anything to say" - Alan Moore, the beginning of Watchmen Stay strong, The Rose
